5 Signs You’re Ready for an OBM (and What to Do Next)
The majority of people I talk to, aren’t ready for an OBM (Online Business Manager) yet and I tell them as much. But another issue people face is knowing when they are ready.
Because here’s the thing, running a business is hard - that’s what we are always told, right? I mean, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
But that doesn’t mean it should feel like you’re hitting your head against a brick wall and going round and round in circles.
If you’re finding yourself stuck in the weeds of everything, the growth has slowed down and you can’t remember the last time you got to do the fun bits of your work, you might just be ready for an OBM.
An OBM (aka me) is the person who steps in to keep things running whilst you focus on what you do best - providing value to your clients.
Here are 5 big signs it might be time to get one on your team.
1. Your to‑do list is never ending
I love a to-do list. There is something so satisfying about ticking off those tasks. In fact, love it so much, I pop tasks on there like ‘brush teeth’ just so I can start my day off feeling accomplished (life hack).
But, if your to-do list is full of tasks that keep getting rolled over to the following week but never actually done, you might be dealing with a capacity issue.
An OBM can help separate the urgent from the noise. They will help you set realistic priorities and keep your business moving.
2. You’re the bottleneck in your own business
If your team need your input for every decision in your business then I hate to break it to you, you have a bottleneck and that bottleneck is you!
An OBM can take over the day to day decisions to keep the wheels turning, manage the team and make sure things happen meaning you don’t have to be glued to your computer all the time and your team can keep things moving.
3. You can’t remember the last time you took a proper break
This is a biggie because it can be really difficult to switch off when you’re self employed. But it shouldn’t be your business dictating that. You should be able to disappear for a week without it all falling to the ground (even if you don’t want to).
An OBM will build processes, automations and team workflows that means your business can stop operating like a house of cards.
4. You’re spending more time managing than delivering
We’ve all heard that when you start out in business, you often have to wear all of the hats.
But, if your time is being eaten up dealing with tech, learning about automations, chasing missing payments, drowning in admin and planning launches then chances are you’re not delivering the value you want to your clients.
An OBM takes those hats off you and wears them for you. You keep the vision and I keep the execution on track.
5. Growth feels impossible without burning out
You’ve grown loads since you started which is amazing - you’re a superstar. But lately, it’s hit a bit of a block and you’re not really sure why.
Every new client feels like a new weight on your shoulders because your systems aren’t supporting your goals. You’re on a one way street to burnout.
An OBM would set up your business to support growth - think systems, automations and the right people in the right roles.
What to Do Next
If you’re nodding along to these thinking, “yes, that’s deffo me!” then chances are, you would benefit from hiring an OBM.
It’s time to ditch the idea that if you just work ‘harder’, things will get better. You can’t be a one (wo)man band forever if you want to grow.
